Sachin at Dubai

Sachin Tendulkar attends a charity sports auction organised by Dubai Cares at the Jumeirah Beach hotel on Monday.

Tendulkar, Argentine football legend Diego Maradona, boxing champion Mike Tyson of the US and Swiss tennis ace Roger Federer are part of the global campaign Dubai Cares, which focusses on providing education for underprivileged children.

Sachin Tendulkar is greeted by His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.

The campaign was launched on September 29 and so far collections have exceeded Dirham 200 million (60 million US dollars).

The campaign hopes to bring together sportspersons from all over the world to interact with schoolchildren, local residents, young cricketers, footballers and communal groups, to further boost this humanitarian cause.

It targets the sports sector, including athletes, stars at the UAE, regional and international levels along with the general public.

Sachin Tendulkar’s Opus Experience, a book which has master blaster’s signature, fetched Dh 300,000 (US$ 81,690).

The Manchester United Opus Experience, a sports publication with historical moments of the club’s history, was auctioned for Dh 5 million (US$ 1,361,507).

The previous record bidding for a sports publication was Dh 4 million (US$ 1,089,205).

Sachin Tendulkar watched in astonishment as wickets kept tumbling at the other end. Only he was able to negotiate the West Indies attack with a solid 65. He used all his experience to garner runs in the middle overs and take India towards a decent total.

The master batsman Tendulkar, who had been out of action since March after undergoing shoulder surgery, smashed an aggressive 141 off 148 balls in the day-night one-dayer at the Kinrara Oval.

On a pitch of unreliable bounce, Tendulkar played an innings of high technical excellence to craft his 40th one-day hundred.

As India took on the West Indies on Thursday in the DLF Cup at Kuala Lumpur, all the buzz was centred around Sachin Tendulkar’s much-anticipated return to the international arena.

The star batsman’s comeback was delayed, as only 3.4 overs were possible in two matches in the jinxed Sri Lanka series, which was finally called off because of persistent rain.

True to the expectations, Tendulkar, who came out to open the innings with captain Rahul Dravid after India won the toss, put on a solid show and went on to post his 40th One-Day International century.

Showing fine touch, he put India firmly on course for a huge score.
